Habit of the Heart Fund

The Habit of the Heart Fund helps Hendricks County women and children in emergency need. To date, the Fund has provided over $130,000 in grants for needs which include eye glasses, hearing aids, dental work, clothing and other essential items.

Guidance counselors and school nurses are seeing an increasing
need for assitance with items that are critical to enabling students
to succeed. A new school year brought many students to class without
proper fi tting clothes and shoes. Habit of the Heart awarded over
$8,500 in the month of August to many families that couldn’t afford
these basic needs. Two weeks before graduation, a high school senior
with a broken front tooth was not looking forward to the ceremony
or upcoming interviews for a job. Her family had no dental insurance
and could not afford to have the tooth fi xed. Caring guidance
counselors and school nurses immediately applied for grants from
the Habit of the Heart Fund. Thanks to a community partner and
Habit of the Heart, she received her diploma with a beautiful smile.
These are just two of the situations that have recently received
assistance from the Habit of the Heart Fund.

The application process is designed to be easy. When a classroom teacher, school nurse or guidance counselor identifies a child in need, they simply fax a Student Emergency Request Form (found at right) to the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation can award grants up to $250 within a week for those meeting necessary criteria. Other grants are taken under consideration by the Habit of the Heart Grant Committee.

The Habit of the Heart Committee works year-round to raise money for the Fund and holds its annual Habit of the Heart Weekend each year in September.  The next Habit of the Heart Weekend will be September 7 & 8, 2012. For more information, contact the Hendricks County Community Foundation at 718.1200 or info@hendrickscountycf.org.

Seventh Annual Habit of the Heart Weekend Raises Awareness and Dollars!

The Habit of the Heart Weekend proved to be a huge success, exceeding expectations and trumping last year’s goal with over $100,000 raised. All proceeds from the event benefit the Habit of the Heart Fund, which helps women and children in need in Hendricks County, and the Hendricks County Community Foundation.

“This year’s event was spectacular,” shares event chair Linda Krampen. “The Habit of the Heart Committee is a passionate group of over 30 women who work passionately and diligently throughout the year to make this a wonderful, fun, enjoyable event for a cause right here in Hendricks County.”

"[With funding from the Habit of the Heart]... He did complete his coursework and graduate with his classmates...the mother cried [when I told her]... it meant graduation...it's going to change their lives."

“In the spring of 2005, Johnny was fitted with neon green hearing aids that would allow him to be a more effective student. As of today, he is enrolled in the talented and gifted class, is consistently on the honor roll and is an asset to our school community.”
